One day

One day I will quit I will quit scribbling words And call them poems One day My mind will be quiet There will be no words To care or share That day I won’t be sad I won’t be mad Peace That is what I will have   From this point To that day I will fight I will fight with the words The words that scream and bleed What will become of these words If I keep them closed in my heart? What would become of me? These words are the evidence For that I was a human I lived and dreamed Dreamed so big The world was better Justice for injustice And I died while I was dreaming.

-the introduction-

he asked, you know Sardegna? in a good bright day, i can see Sardegna from my home. i saw pure joy and memories dripping from his face. sardegna, where? i asked, honestly, i had no idea. you don't know? he was perplexed. his disappointment unsettled me. i sat there regretting my lack of geographical knowledge. he pulled the google map. here here, look! sardegna, the island. just in the vision of the boy standing on the shore of tunisia. do you know yazhppanam? jaffna in english well, it was my turn. i know colombo he said and asked jaffna, where? i pulled the same map and showed him here here, look! my homeland. survived a civil war surviving war by other means. now we know where we come from.

Home

The king tide washes            the pieces of my old life.      There remains my skeleton           free of attachments.      My soul is ready to sail           somewhere rather quiet.      Home is a mindset           I already had figured.

all about love

We were taught that if we were good kids, we would be loved by others. We were made to think any form of punishment in the name of love was okay because it was for our good. We were taught to love God, others, animals and objects. We were motivated to love doing service to society. However, we grew with the impression that self-love was selfish. And, the love between two adults mostly remained a sacred (or secret) topic in our culture. The love stories I knew stopped with marriage. What is then? What is outside of it? What is real? Is love real? Now that I am an adult, I love talking all about love with people who are ready to have that deep, beautiful, sometimes uncomfortable but important conversation. I didn't know the existence of bell hooks until the news of her death. It's a shame! Several colleagues and a few friends shared how she inspired them to think, act and write. I went and bought this book of hers. bell hooks deconstructs the popular culture, patriarchal societ...

Self-worth

Sometimes, academia makes you feel like a loser. The toxic academic culture makes you doubt your self-worthiness and the value of your intellectual contribution to society. I encountered several rejections last year concerning research grant applications, PhD scholarship applications, job applications and my first solo academic journal paper. There was so much negativity around me. I was mentally tired and ready to give up on my research career. This poem was written at the beginning of a long healing process. Know your self-worth. I look at my inbox Like a deminor Ready for the damage control Emails don’t excite me These days They disappoint me I come prepared to be disappointed I open the email Like unwrapping a box A bomb in it Knowing it would explode in my face Once opened Anyway Rebelliousness comes with price I read the impersonal message The standard response My time, effort and resources Not appreciated Not even acknowledged This time My heart doesn’t even flinch I came prepar...

Thought of the Day

Anthropocentrism is what costs the selfish creatures with tiny brains and huge egos a beautiful home!

-The World Peace-

Tarra is the quietest one Her actions and thoughts are so quiet So deep You will know if you go and sit with her She carries herself like a wise woman If you ask She would take you to her home Let you wonder or wander Or both Once you are in You wouldn’t want to get out ever Her beautiful home Oh, heaven on earth! It is a place of tranquillity So green, so fresh! You could smell the earthiness Feel the world peace Learn the ancient history There is Myrtle Beech Standing tall and mighty The oldest at the home At least, a thousand years old Ask him about his older generation The ones from Gondwana They might have seen the dinosaurs Don’t forget to greet Ms. Cyathea Cunnighamii And her cousin Dickinson Antarctica The coolest ones at the home All the children love them So they piggyback The children are fascinating creatures You will see if you observe them They are the naughty ones Wetting themselves is their business World peace is not out there Not at UN General Assembly It’s here, at p...

What can women do in response to discrimination, sexism and misogyny?

I have been battling these diseases in society for as long as I can remember. However, when a similar question was directed at me during a guest appearance at a Zoom meeting with undergrad students, I gave them a vague answer. It started with something like ‘I am not an expert’ and ended ‘we can only try’. Thanks to my academic experience. It made me devalue my life experience and reminded me of no publications I did on this subject at that moment. Thanks to my half-baked activism. I thought of all the incredible women’s rights activists who continue to speak up in public spaces. I came to a verdict that I should not speak up because I am not much active in that space. At the end of the session, I made some time to reflect on that question and my answer. The question should have been answered better based on my lived experience. If you put your foot down during a dinner conversation with your family or friends when there is a sexist comment, if you stand up for the girl in your classr...

நின்னைச் சரணடைந்தேன் கண்ணம்மா!

A dark room lit by a small oil lamp combines with the #lockdown mood. So what song would you choose to cry out your heart? I chose the divine song of Bharathiyar sung by the one and only Bombay Jeyashri.

Courage

Imagine being forced to be quiet and obedient for so long. Imagine when you finally muster up your courage to take a step forward to find your life's purpose and happiness, only to be bullied and looked down on. Imagine the inner strength you need to navigate your internal struggle and push back the external forces. This is an experimental piece. How can we use classical art forms to address social issues?

Audre Lorde's Essays

Audre Lorde. What can I say? Admiration ❤️ A few favourite lines from her essays: “For women, then, poetry is not luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence. It forms the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams towards survival and change, first made into language, then into idea, then into more tangible action.” “For women, the need and desire to nurture each other is not pathological but redemptive, and it is within that knowledge that our real power is discovered. It is the real connection which is so feared by a patriarchal world. Only within a patriarchal structure is maternity the only social power open to women.” “Any discussion among women about racism must include the recognition and the use of anger.” “Revolution is not a one-time event.” The most favourite quote by which I was introduced to Audre’s work, “The master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.” ✊🏽

The Paradise

It is one of those days. Transported back from spring to winter. The clouds weep like an adamant child. Cold seeps through the windows into the heart. The sweet spot under the quilt calls your name. You cannot resist the warmth it promises. Come to me, the bed calls you seductively. It weakens your mind. The body begs longingly, just get in. You avoid the ultimatum until you cannot take it anymore. Home. The soft, fluffy quilt. Roll, roll and roll the way up. There you go, little burrito. Tuck your toes and hold up to your nose. Let the warm embrace you through. Lay there still until you become a parcel of lamprais. Dream of a holiday in paradise. Roll from left to right then right to left. The bed is your universe. Stretch your body and tweak your toes. Paradise is not anywhere else. Here it is wrapped in a comfy quilt.
